Announcing a GAME CHANGER for Young People in Sales

Over the past few of years, I’ve had the privilege of being able to work with some of the best young sales teams in both the UK and Australia. Many of the companies I’ve worked with have brought young people straight out of school into a sales or sales support role where they have been challenged to do the hard things that sales requires. As anyone in sales knows, these first couple of years can be very difficult for young people who have had no previous experience in selling.

I recall a conversation I had early last year with a business owner here in the UK who had a very successful sales team. This was a family company that recognised the importance of sales and had a focus on bringing the best and brightest young people into the sales team straight from school. The problem that they found was that many of these young people were simply not prepared for the personal challenges that a career in selling required.
This is a recurring theme that I’ve seen time and time again; young people being thrown into the “Deep End” of sales without either the training they need to meet the challenges they’ll invariably face or else picking up their sales knowledge from existing members of the sales team who are more often than not selling the wrong way.
The best way to wreck a promising sales career is to instil the young salesperson with bad sales habits.  It’s tragic.
This inspired me to try to find a way to fix this problem. While we’ve developed and run Industry Leading Sales Training Programs for many years, these training courses were aimed at salespeople with experience in the field and some relevant sales knowledge. The challenge was to create a sales training program that would appeal to young people, focus on their values and give them the critical skills that they need to drive their sales success.
I had to move away from text based learning, which had been the mainstay of our traditional programs and focus on “Games Based” interactive learning that involved you at every stage. I then needed to combine this with coaching and assessment to embed the new knowledge while always making sure that the young people were completely engaged. Not exactly an easy task but one that I was ready to take a shot at.
The Creation of FLYING START!
Here we are a year and a half later, about to launch our fabulous new FLYING START sales training program specifically designed for young people. We have completed an exhaustive pilot program, testing the innovative new format and the new training platform, and the results have been amazing. The young people who participated raved about the sales results that they achieved following the program.
Personally, I couldn’t have been more thrilled with the results we have achieved to date. What we have found is that our FLYING SATRT program is ideally suited to young people in sales ranging from school leavers right through to those with 4 or 5 years experience but not a lot of formal training.
Most important of all, is that it’s great fun for participants. It combines on-line animation and graphics, in job tasks and regular coaching via webinars where the participants are encouraged to interact with their coach, ask questions and put forward scenarios.
